Indignant for being disallowed to enter the college fest, a 22-year-old final-year BA student from Sindhi College, Bengaluru stabbed the college security guard to death on the college premises.
The incident occurred at 3.30 pm on Wednesday when the college fest was underway at the college campus in Hebbal.
Police identified the victim as 52-year-old Jai Kishore Roy, a resident of Hunasamaranahalli. The accused was identified as Bhargab Jyothi Barman. The student, who hails from Assam, stayed at a PG accommodation near the college.
Ironically, the college management were in severe shock as Barman was among one of the high scoring students in his class.
A case of murder has been registered under the recently passed Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita section 101 based on a complaint filed by Roy’s colleague Rajashekar, who is also a fellow security staff.
According to sources, the college mandated that students could only enter the college campus once during the fest and re-entry was not permitted. When Barman attempted to leave the premises, Roy, who was on duty, informed him he would not be let inside again if he left the premises.
However, the student returned a few minutes later and sought Roy to allow him to enter the camps. Suspecting that the student was under the influence of alcohol, the guard refused to let him in. An argument ensued between the two.
A while later, the student left and returned to continue the fight. In a fit of rage, Burman stabbed Roy in the chest, killing him on the spot. Students and staff who witnessed the attack rushed him to a hospital, where he was declared dead.
The police said that the accused immediately tried to escape the incident. However, the other students stopped him and raised an alarm. Soon, Amruthahalli police rushed to the spot and detained him. While it is believed prima facie that the student was inebriated, forensic reports are awaited.
