Students concerned about internal marks evaluation policy: Survey

MBSHSE results out; 94.22 percent students pass, girls outperform boys

A survey conducted by study abroad platform, The WorldGrad, found that 60% of students do not think it is a good idea to use pre-boards and internal school marks to calculate their 12th results. The survey was conducted online amongst 4000+ users who have registered on the platform in the last two months.

Pursuant to the announcement of the cancellation of 12th exams, speculations are rife with what would be the methodology to calculate the 12th board scores. Being one of the decisive exams for the career and future of a student, the pressure is stupendous on the school administration.

CBSE and CISCE may ask schools to submit their internal scores and most likely combine it with class 10th and 11th results. This process is likely to take another month, maybe more, which means results will be announced by July or August 2021” said Abhinav Mital, Co-Founder, The WorldGrad.

He added, “However, based on the survey, it is likely that students will not be happy with this methodology. There are two reasons for it. Firstly, this year all the internal examinations have been conducted online with most schools struggling with the modality. Students and parents have little confidence in the internal assessments conducted. Nearly half the students haven’t even gotten formal results from the schools yet suggests that schools haven’t really formalized anything. We have heard from some of our students that schools have just “shown” them marks online during a zoom call! Secondly, students always use the final examinations to prepare and improve their performance and maximize their results. Which will not happen this time.

The sentiment to find a better alternative for grade 12th students is clear from further results of the survey which shows that around 80% of the respondents are happy with the cancellation of the exams. The survey also shows that 80% of the students have given a pre-board exam but only 55% have received results. However, whether they have received the results or not, 60% of the students are not in favor of using these for their final scores.

CBSE Secretary Anurag Tripathi in various interviews has already announced that they are putting together the criteria for assigning marks to students. He suggested that the process could take 2 months without putting a date to the timeline. If student feedback is considered, the boards may be facing a more complicated situation than expected where many schools may not be in a position to produce bankable scores, and some may even have to conduct fresh exams to produce them. This could very well see results being pushed out to the end of August.

For study abroad aspirants, this could be a major blow. Any delay beyond July means they may miss out the September intake cycle. To streamline this study abroad platforms like The WorldGrad have introduced pre-enrolments to undergraduate courses of students on their platform who are awaiting their 12th results.
