The Economic Survey 2024-25 highlights the need for a strategic plan in skills and education to harness India’s demographic dividend and achieve the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. It calls for early vocational training, industry-academia collaboration, and continuous skill development to create a globally competitive workforce.
A key challenge identified is the mismatch between educational qualifications and job market demands. Over 53% of graduates and 36% of postgraduates are underemployed, underscoring the need for targeted skill development and employment-linked incentives.
The survey emphasizes aligning skill programs with industry needs, particularly focusing on women and girls to enhance workforce participation. It also advocates for early vocational education to improve employability and promote a transition to emerging sectors.
With 65% of its population under 35 and a median age of 28, India has the potential to be a global talent hub. However, this requires equipping the workforce with industry-relevant skills. A strong skilling ecosystem can boost employability, attract investments, drive innovation, and strengthen India’s global economic position.
The survey also stresses the impact of automation, AI, and digitalization on job markets, highlighting the urgency of a forward-looking skill development strategy. Addressing skill mismatches through better employer-worker alignment and demand-driven training is key to realizing India’s economic potential.
Skill development is central to Aatmanirbhar Bharat, ensuring the workforce meets evolving industry standards. A structured, long-term approach is essential to fostering inclusive growth and positioning India as a leader in the global economy.
