The tragic death of 58-year-old teacher Jasbir Kaur has raised serious concerns about workplace harassment and its impact on mental health, particularly in educational environments. Kaur, who had been a dedicated teacher for over 20 years at a school in the Dunlop area of North 24 Parganas district, was found hanging in her apartment in the Dakshineswar area on Thursday.
Before her death, Kaur allegedly conducted a live stream on her social media, where she accused the school principal and members of the management committee of mental harassment. These claims, made just hours before her death, suggest that her suicide might have been linked to the mistreatment she experienced at work.
Kaur’s brother filed an FIR at the Dakshineswar police station, naming the principal and management committee members and accusing them of abetting suicide. Following this, the police have questioned the school authorities. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities speaking to Kaur’s neighbors and the parents of students to gather more details.
Kaur had been living alone in the apartment as her sons reside abroad. The police investigation is focused on understanding the circumstances leading to her tragic death, while also shedding light on the broader issue of harassment in educational institutions. This case underscores the need for schools and workplaces to implement stronger policies to prevent and address harassment, ensuring a healthy work environment for all employees.
As the investigation continues, this incident brings to the forefront the urgent need for better mental health support, especially for teachers and other staff members who may be facing undue pressures in their professional lives. The case serves as a reminder that addressing workplace harassment should be a priority to prevent such tragedies in the future.
