Technology & Health

With the advent of technology, the world has inevitably become a smaller place. Everything is just a touch away. While this has benefited us in multiple ways, it has also somehow made us more lethargic, giving rise to a host of metabolic or better termed “lifestyle disorders”. Here are some tips to keep you and your family away from these smart screens:

  • Define clear guidelines: Every family member should be made aware of what is included in the screen time and how can they effectively manage it.
  • Establish age-related boundaries: Depending on the age and the activity necessary, the screen time will vary. For example, a preschool child might not need the screen much while an older child could have a varied time frame.
  • Use screen time tracking tools: It is a good idea to track how much time you are investing in various electronic devices which account to your total screen time at the end of the day.
  • Promote alternate activities: Introducing novel pastimes, engaging in outdoor pursuits, playing board games, joining reading clubs, and so on can support the advancement of social, cognitive, and physical growth.
  • Maintain consistent routines: Following a fixed routine helps to eliminate any off the scheduled screen time.

Reduced screen time can significantly benefit families, including improved mental, emotional, and physical health. It can improve sleep quality due to blue light emissions, enhance family bonding, and promote physical health by encouraging outdoor play and physical activity, which are essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and preventing obesity. Limiting screen usage can improve concentration, reduce exposure to harmful content, and promote in-person social connections. Reducing screen time can boost productivity in both adults and children, as research shows it can help build healthy habits from an early age.
