Thapar University (formerly Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology) was founded in 1956 by Karam Chand Thapar of the Thapar Group of Companies. The institute was granted the status of a Deemed University in 1985 by the University Grants Commission (UGC). It is one of north India’s premier institutes of engineering and technology. It is the first college in Punjab that started admitting students exclusively through the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). Thapar University offers a host of undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD courses in several disciplines of engineering and technology. The faculty student ratio of this institute is 1:33.
The institute has a dedicated training and placement cell which facilitates summer training, soft skills training, educational tours, industrial visits, career guidance and placement assistance to the students.
The campus is housed in a 250-acre land in the heart of Patiala and has six old academic blocks, namely A, B, C, D, E, F and two newly constructed TAN and H block. The old building of Thapar Polytechnic College has been converted into an academic block named G. In 2018, the institute inaugurated three new buildings designed by McCullough Mulvin Architects of Ireland; these included a lecture hall complex, computer block and a new library.
The institute has several well-maintained playgrounds and International standard synthetic athletic track, synthetic tennis court synthetic basketball court and synthetic badminton indoor court to encourage the students to take part in different games such as cricket, hockey, football, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, lawn tennis and badminton. The institute has also a gym in every hostel and a swimming pool complex equipped with all modern facilities. The campus also houses hostels for boys and girls.

In India, the university ranked 23 among engineering colleges by India Today in 2020, 27 by Outlook India in 2019. The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) has ranked 29th among engineering institutions in 2020, 31st among universities and 51st overall. It was ranked 601-800 in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings of 2020 and 156 in Asia. The QS World University Rankings of 2020 ranked it 261-270 in Asia.
Hostel facilities are provided to the students of the university. There are eight hostels for boys (namely hostel-A,B,C,H,J,K,L,M) and five hostels for girls (namely hostel-E,G,I,N,PG)
