Officials have shortlisted around 9,000 schools from across the country for the flagship Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme of the Ministry of Education. The officials selected these institutions from over 2.5 lakh government schools, including Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas, which were eligible to apply for the tag.
The schools were assessed on six broad parameters: curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment; access and infrastructure; leadership in human resources; inclusive practices and gender equity; management, monitoring, and governance; and beneficiary satisfaction, according to PTI.
“We have shortlisted around 9000 schools. We are very satisfied with them and will be making an announcement regarding the names of the schools very soon,” said a senior MoE official.
“The PM SHRI scheme is a new centrally sponsored initiative aimed at developing over 14,500 schools across India by strengthening select existing schools managed by all forms of governments. Its goal is to provide quality teaching for the cognitive development of students and foster well-rounded individuals equipped with key 21st-century skills.”
The Education Ministry is still awaiting seven states to sign Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to upgrade their schools under the PM-SHRI scheme, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on September 5th last year.
Authorities in seven states and UTs, including Delhi, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Jharkhand, have been urged by the Centre to come forward and adopt the scheme, ensuring quality education for all students.
According to an official, the Education Minister has written a letter to the concerned states and UTs, highlighting that effective implementation of the PM-SHRI scheme will enable the representation of all components of the NEP, ensuring quality education for students. The minister further stated that the PM SHRI schools would become exemplary institutions for quality education in the country.
