Overview

The Lawrence School, Lovedale is a co-ed boarding school affiliated with Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi. Established in 1858, it is one of the premier residential public schools in the country. It is an autonomous institution run under the aegis of The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

The school’s vision is to nurture the conscience and intellect of every student and staff member in a caring and inspiring environment. The institution aspires to create a cohesive identity of a ‘Lawrencian’ and its eminent faculty works with students in engendering a culture of continuous ‘life-long learning’ and building synergy at various levels of its human resources to facilitate a safe, caring and student-centered co-educational residential ‘living and learning’ space embodying the Lawrencian motto “Never Give In”. 

Being one of the elite institutions in the country it takes pride in its 150-year-old history and tradition. 

Campus

The Lawrence School, Lovedale was certified a Platinum IGBC Green Campus by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), an aegis of the prestigious Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The large expanse of the campus stretching over 720 acres is divided into prep school comprising classes V and VI, Junior School comprising classes VII and VIII and Senior School comprising classes IX-XII. The classrooms and dormitories of the schools are situated in their respective buildings. The girls are housed in the girls’ school and are required to attend classes in their respective buildings. The senior school, also referred to as “the boys’ school” (although the Senior School building also houses the classrooms of both boys and girls of classes IX to XII and the School’s administrative offices, besides the dormitories for the boys) is a magnificent two-storey building with a clock tower of 130 feet, built in Italian Gothic style and designed by Architect Robert Chisholm.

The infrastructure of the school also includes a heated swimming pool, athletic tracks (400 metres), courts for basketball, badminton, squash and tennis, fields for cricket, hockey, football, archery and horse-riding, indoor cricket nets, rooms for weight-training and billiards and snooker and a cross-country route. The campus also has one of the oldest and most resourceful libraries in the Nilgiris. 

The school has kitchen and bakery, dining halls, well furnished dormitories, transport facilities, laboratories and mechanised laundry. It also houses a 50 bed infirmary with all basic facilities for health support.

Academics

The Lawrence School is affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi and follows the NCERT curriculum. The students have access to the following departments of education within the school:

  • Department of English: Established with the mandate of teaching pupils effective communication in written and spoken English, the department is responsible for “The Lawrencian” and “Never Give-in” publications and also heads the production and direction of the annual school plays. The Department has won many accolades for the School and pupils of Classes X and XII have been awarded with merit certificates for excellence at the Board Examination (AISSCE and AISSE).
  • Department of mathematics: this department’s vision includes providing quality education in Mathematics to meet both local and global education needs and encouraging students to learn Mathematics with understanding and applying Mathematics in day to day life
  • Department of science: Guided by the vision of the National Curriculum Framework 2005 and the National Education Policy 2019 of providing high quality education to all, the department of Science lays the foundation in Junior school, where the teaching of Science is directed to nurture analytical and critical skills that develop a scientific temper in the student. The requisite theoretical knowledge is supported with practical skills as the student progresses to the senior school level where the branches are diversified into physics, chemistry and biology. Project based learning, quiz programmes and field visits are taken to translate classroom learning into an experiential process. Thus, students are encouraged to excel in the evaluation of the learning outcome in the form of the All India Secondary School Examination and the All India Senior School Certificate Examination.
  • Department of Humanities: this department integrates the study of Social Sciences with the study of commerce, providing pupils with the freedom of expression. The Lovedale School offers  a wide range of subject choices like history, geography, political science, economics, psychology, business studies and accountancy. Pupils have the flexibility to combine these subjects according to their interests and career prospects. 
  • Department of Languages: this department comprises Hindi, Sanskrit, Tamil and French and aims at providing holistic development creating individuals with Indian values, a modern approach and effective communication skills. The institution focuses on developing soft skills and emotional quotient (EQ) of the learners. From class V to X, the language teachers not only produce results in the Board examination but also inculcate student interest through innovative ideas such as dialogues, poems, songs, and various language-based inter-house and inter-school competitions such as poem recitations and spell-bees. Through this, all students get chances to develop and show-case their language based skills.
  • Department of computer science:​ this department aspires to see all students inclined towards computer technology and prepares students to adapt to the latest technologies for development of self and mankind.

Admission

The applicants are required to download the application form from the School website. Alternatively, the form can be collected from the Accounts Office for registration.

The Application Form along with the Registration Fee of Rs.15,000/- should be sent to the Headmaster at the earliest. (Registration does not guarantee admission). For admission to class XI, the registration is open till 31st January and the interaction will be held in the first week of April. The Registration Fee is neither refundable nor transferable.

The prospective parents must register the name of the students mentioning the class and academic year. Academic session in The Lawrence School, Lovedale begins in April each year. Class V is preferred as the entry point. Beyond these classes, there is seldom any vacancy, though seats occasionally become available in the higher classes. Admission is based on an Aptitude Analysis held in major Indian cities in the preceding November. Due to a large number of applicants, priority is given to those who register first. All students, except the children of the School staff members, are expected to stay in the boarding houses.

Newly admitted children will be permitted to join only on completion of admission formalities which include:

  • The full payment of fee, as applicable.
  •  Receipt of agreement duly signed by the parent/guardians.
  • Submission of transfer certificate, previous school’s result sheet/ record and transcript /board examination result, conduct certificate, health certificate, six copies of passport size photographs and Date of Birth Certificate.
  • Other attached documents, as required with the duly filled and signed application form.

The fee structure varies depending on whether the applicants and their family are civilians, NRI’s or in Defence sectors.

Achievement

The school is also regularly ranked among India’s best co-ed boarding school in the EducationWorld India School Rankings survey. 

Accommodation

The school hostel has four residential houses are Aravali, Nilgiri, Sumeru and Vindhya. The students of each house live, eat and study together. 

There are ambulance services on-campus and the infirmary functions round the clock under the care of a resident medical officer (RMO)/doctor, staff nurses and medicine dispensing unit with a pharmacist and two ambulances.
