The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has initiated an inquiry into allegations of sexual harassment and bullying leveled against an assistant professor, who resigned shortly after the complaint was filed, officials confirmed on Monday.

According to a TISS official, who requested anonymity, the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) began its probe a day after receiving the complaint on February 20. “The ICC promptly acknowledged the complaint and initiated an inquiry, ensuring that both the complainant and the accused are given a fair hearing. The assistant professor resigned on February 21,” the official stated.

The complaint, addressed to TISS Chancellor Professor DP Singh and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, accuses the assistant professor of making unwarranted personal advances and using intimidation tactics, creating a toxic atmosphere on campus. The student alleged that the professor misused his authority to harass and manipulate, leading to a distressing learning environment.

Apart from seeking strict disciplinary action, the complainant has urged the institution to implement an anonymous grievance redressal mechanism, allowing students to report harassment without fear of retaliation. Several student groups have since rallied in support of the complainant, demanding greater accountability and transparency in handling such cases.

TISS officials assured that the ICC, functioning as an independent body, will conduct a thorough and impartial inquiry. “We are committed to ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all students. Any form of harassment or misconduct will be dealt with firmly,” the official added.

Meanwhile, the resignation of the accused professor has raised questions about institutional responsibility and the handling of harassment cases in higher education. Activists and student bodies have called for stronger safeguards to protect victims and prevent future instances of misconduct.

The ICC will continue its investigation and is expected to submit its findings in the coming weeks.
