Capital of the desert state of Rajasthan, Jaipur (pop. 4 million), serves as a gateway to several tourist destinations of Rajasthan. One of the earliest planned cities in modern India, Jaipur served as the capital of the eponymous state during the British Raj era and was subsequently made the capital of the state of Rajasthan after India became independent. Founded in the 18th century by the warrior-king Sawai Jaisingh II, Jaipur is popularly known as the Pink City after the colour of its old city buildings.
Over the years, the heritage city has metamorphosed into an epicentre of industries such as tourism, luxury textiles and ready-made garments, gems and jewelry, rubber-based prosthetics, food and beverages, tobacco, mining and minerals production, automobiles and bicycles manufacturing, and machinery and machine tools. In the last few decades, Jaipur has also emerged as a prominent IT hub in the country.
Owing to its vibrant economy, the city hosts regional offices of major industrial lobbies such as the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). It is also home to the Jaipur Stock Exchange, a regional stock exchange founded in 1989.
