Admin capital of the eastern seaboard state of West Bengal, Kolkata (pop.14.5 million), formerly Calcutta, is India’s second most populous city after Mumbai. Founded as an East India Company trading post, it served as the capital of British India from 1773–1911 resulting in the promotion of British-style K-12 and higher education institutions in the city. Sprawling north to south along the east bank of the Hooghly river, the city is famed for its grand colonial architecture, art galleries and cultural festivals.
With an estimated GDP of USD 150.1 billion, Kolkata boasts the third largest economy after Mumbai and Delhi and hosts India’s oldest stock exchange company – The Calcutta Stock Exchange. Thriving industries include steel, heavy engineering, mining, minerals, cement, pharmaceuticals, food processing, agriculture, electronics, textiles, and jute.
Some of the best schools in Kolkata were established in the pre-Independence era and have continued to maintain an excellent reputation by continually adapting to the changing times to prepare children for an increasingly globalised world.
