A transformative journey has unfolded for 39 transgender individuals in Hyderabad, who have moved from seeking alms to directing traffic as part of a pioneering initiative by the Telangana government. These individuals, now traffic assistants, reflect a shift towards societal inclusion and empowerment.
Nisha, stationed at Patny Centre, shared her joy at being respected by citizens where she once faced discrimination. She thanked CM A Revanth Reddy for creating this opportunity. “My parents and friends now appreciate me,” she said, underscoring the personal and societal change this role has brought.
The initiative began when CM Reddy proposed employing transgender persons in high-traffic areas to reduce violations. Officially inducted on December 22, these individuals underwent a rigorous selection and training process. Of 100 applicants, 39 successfully completed training, earning a role akin to home guards, with uniforms and salaries aligned with their counterparts.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) P. Viswa Prasad commended their efforts, noting no complaints since their induction. While they are still honing their skills, he emphasized their commitment to integrating with society and excelling in their roles.
This initiative marks a milestone in fostering inclusivity, offering transgenders respect, dignity, and a platform to contribute meaningfully to society.
