In what could be a revolution, three transgender teachers will be employed to teach students at government schools in Karnataka.
This is the first time in the state’s history that the transgender teachers are being appointed. They will teach in classes 6, 7 and 8.
They are among the 13,363 candidates who have been selected in the provisional list for Graduate Primary Teachers, minister for school education and literacy, BG Nagesh said on Friday.
Five students had appeared for the competitive test. Among them. Suresh Babu from Chikkaballapura is eligible to teach English while Ravi Kumar YR from Madhugiri and Ashwathamma from Raichur can teach social sciences.
The Karnataka government conducted the competitive test for 15,000 posts recently. Of the applicants, 13,363 candidates have been shortlisted. As many as 4,187 are from Hyderabad Karnataka region.
in Karnataka, this is the first time engineers with BEd are allowed to teach in schools. 34 candidates had taken the exam, of which 19 cleared.
Last time the exam was held, only 2000 candidates cleared the exam for 10,000 posts according to data provided by the department.
“This time, we rationalised the question paper. Last year, the paper was extremely tough as well. This time we did a mock run. We checked on the number of questions that can be answered in the set time frame, its difficulty levels and tweaked it to meet the needs of the profession,” explained Vishal R, commissioner of department of public instruction.
