Donald Trump’s education vision is focused on eliminating what he sees as “wokeness” and left-wing influence in U.S. schools. His policies include barring transgender athletes from competing in girls’ sports, prohibiting lessons on gender identity and structural racism, and dismantling diversity and inclusion offices. Trump intends to use federal funding as leverage to enforce these ideas, threatening cuts to schools that promote critical race theory, LGBTQ+ rights, or other topics he deems inappropriate.
In his platform, Trump has promised to withdraw federal money from schools that require vaccines or masks, aligning his education policies with his broader conservative agenda. He aims to encourage reforms such as ending teacher tenure, implementing universal school choice programs, and giving parents the power to elect school principals. One of his boldest proposals is to eliminate the US Department of Education, an idea championed by conservatives for years, arguing that it has been overtaken by “radicals.”
Though Trump’s proposals are controversial, his administration would hold significant authority to shape education through the enforcement of civil rights laws. He could target schools or colleges accused of violating those laws, using the threat of funding cuts to push institutions to adopt his vision. He has also hinted at legislation to fine universities with diversity programs or those accused of discrimination, proposing that funds from large university endowments could be taxed to fund a new, free online university.
Despite these threats, Trump’s rhetoric has been met with opposition from those who argue that his agenda distorts education for political gain. Critics, including education advocacy groups, assert that Trump’s proposals are based on misinformation and would harm students, particularly those in marginalized communities. They argue that his focus on removing programs that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion only perpetuates divisiveness in schools.
Additionally, Trump’s stance on school curriculum is clear: he wants to ensure it reflects “patriotic” values. He plans to reinstate the 1776 Commission, which promotes a more conservative view of American history, and establish a credentialing body to certify teachers who align with his vision. While many of Trump’s education goals require legislative action or lengthy federal processes, he is expected to move quickly to undo many of President Biden’s education policies, especially those related to racial equity and Title IX protections.
Trump’s focus on education will continue to be a cornerstone of his presidency, with sweeping promises that will impact students, parents, and educators nationwide. His vision is one of removing political influence from schools—except where it aligns with his own conservative values.
