Setting an example, the Udgam Group of Schools is the first in Gujarat to place a life-saving Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in Udgam School for Children, Zebar School for Children, Satellite School for Children, and Bodakdev School for Children.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to encourage the use of AEDs in public spaces, especially in schools and colleges. Similar programs in high schools in Western countries have shown a high survival rate for individuals experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.
Recent research highlights the effectiveness of AEDs, indicating a 38% survival rate for those administered with AEDs, compared to only 9% for those receiving CPR alone. Every minute following a cardiac arrest incident reduces the chances of survival by 10%.
Despite the alarming number of sudden cardiac arrest cases in India, there is limited awareness about AEDs. Udgam School for Children not only installed an AED on its premises but also advocates for laws mandating AEDs in public spaces.
Emphasizing the need for increased education and public awareness to ensure the widespread adoption of AEDs, Manan Choksi, Executive Director of Udgam School for Children, said, “We need laws mandating Automated External Defibrillators in all public places, especially schools, and colleges. There is also a need for extensive training programs to ensure at least 50% of the staff is trained in CPR and AED. Attention should also be paid to increase awareness about AEDs to ensure that people do not resist its use when needed.”
