UGC delists Sangai International University, Manipur

The University Grants Commission on Thursday said that a notice stating that the name of Sangai International University, Manipur has been removed from the authorized list of universities in the country. A public notice which was issued on May 15 was made public by the UGC on Thursday.

Sangai International University (SIU) is a private university in Churachandpur, Manipur. Established in 2015, the main campus of SIU is located in S.Bauljang Village, Churachandpur, Manipur and the city campus is located at VM Building, Rengkai Road, Churachandpur. With a belief that higher education must be accessible to all, the varsity is tuition-free and asks students to pay an Application Processing and Registration fee Rs 950 and Examination Fees, which ranges from Rs 500 to Rs 1000 per paper.

The UGC, which said that SIU has failed to provide the necessary documentation during inspection, has asked students not to seek admission here.

“The University was requested to provide the information required for inspection vide UGC letters of even number dated 03.07.2015, 12.08.2015, 21.10.2016, 01.03.2019 & 11.01.2021. In spite of repeated written communications, the University has failed to submit the required information. Therefore, UGC issued a Show Cause Notice vide F. No. 8-19/2015 (CPP-I/PU) dated 19.12.2023. The university was given an opportunity to show cause as to why action against the university be not taken by the UGC to remove its name from the list of Universities as maintained by the UGC under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956.

“A copy of Show Cause Notice was also sent to the Department of Higher Education, Govt. of Manipur with the request to take immediate action and send its comments. The UGC has not received any reply from the university and the comments from the Govt. of Manipur have also not been received,” reads the notice.

Owing to this, the name of Sangai International University, Churachandpur, Manipur has been removed from the UGC list of universities under Section 2(f) of UGC Act, 1956. The university cannot offer any UGC specified degree of Under-Graduate, Post Graduate level including Ph.D.

Students have been advised not to take admission in any of the programmes of university from the date of issue of this Public Notice. Any degrees offered by SIU will not be treated as recognized or valid for the purpose of higher education and employment.
