The University Grants Commission (UGC) has informed universities that it is not permitted to print students’ Aadhaar numbers on degrees and provisional certificates. This communication from the higher education regulator comes in response to reports suggesting that some state governments were considering including full Aadhaar numbers on these documents for verification purposes during recruitment or admissions.
UGC Secretary Manish Joshi emphasized that according to norms, no entity possessing Aadhaar numbers should disclose any database or record containing these numbers unless they have been appropriately redacted or concealed. Therefore, the practice of printing Aadhaar numbers on degrees and provisional certificates is not allowed, and higher education institutions are urged to adhere to the rules and regulations of the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India).
