The UK is eager to host an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) for the establishment of an offshore campus, with some UK universities already engaged in discussions with IITs to explore this possibility, according to prominent British government officials.
Additionally, numerous UK universities express interest in establishing branch campuses in India, but they await a finalized regulatory framework from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to take concrete steps in this direction. Steve Smith, International Education Champion for the UK government, highlighted that two IITs have already announced offshore campus initiatives, and while the development may not happen immediately, this trend is expected to shape the future of the bilateral relationship.
Moreover, Smith pointed out that regulatory frameworks must be established before UK universities can formally set up their campuses in India. The University Grants Commission (UGC) released draft regulations in January this year to permit foreign universities to establish campuses in India, but the final regulations have not yet been finalized and notified.
Alison Barrett, Director India for the British Council, emphasized the importance of establishing a two-way partnership and branch campuses as part of the future of international education. Barrett mentioned the need to finalize regulations to ensure smooth collaborations between Indian and UK institutions in these areas.
The delegation, consisting of representatives from 31 UK higher education institutions and bodies, is currently visiting India to explore opportunities for partnerships, discuss transnational education, and address the expansion of higher education collaborations between the two countries.
The discussions will also focus on improving the quality of education and facilitating the internationalization of education systems, with insights into mutual recognition of qualifications and foreign collaboration regulation of the UGC. Additionally, two-way student mobility opportunities will be explored during the visit.
