University of Chicago Booth School of Business, EMPEA to discuss future of private equity in India

Chicago Conversations, presented by the University Of Chicago Booth School Of Business, in collaboration with the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association (EMPEA) will be hosted in Mumbai on June 10, 2013 with a focus on assessing the current scenario and take a view of private equity in India. According to recent estimates, India-focused private equity funds have raised around US$ 50 billion, primarily during India’s economic and stock market boom between 2005 and 2007.

Today, despite the foreign exchange fluctuations, the political climate and government regulations, Mumbai remains an attractive hub of private equity opportunity. However, now more than a decade after the private equity industry took off in India, investors are beginning to take a step back and assess their investments in India.

Moderated by Scott F Meadow, clinical professor of entrepreneurship, University of Chicago Booth School of Business, industry experts like Maninder Cheema, deputy general manager – Market Regulation Department, Division of Policy, SEBI, Sanjay Nayyar, Head, KKR India, Dhiraj Rajaram, founder, CEO and chairman, Mu Sigma, and Rajesh Raju, managing director, Kalaari Capital (both alumni Chicago Booth), will deliberate on a host of pertinent topics  while steering an honest and thought-provoking discussion on what the industry must do to prosper and reignite the fire in the private equity business.

Meadow said, “It is exciting to be in India and steer a panel discussion on the topic of private equity at a time when the country is witnessing a slowdown in the overall inflow of foreign investment owning to policy issues and global sentiment of uncertainty on investing in India. The discussion is certain to be interesting with industry coming together to deliberate on issues relating private equity and the investment climate in India.”

Every year Booth, in major cities around the world, organizes panel discussions and debates on issues plaguing a variety of industries, including Energy, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, and Technology, besides others.

Private Equity is part of the Chicago Conversations series started in 2008. Chicago Conversations events bring together Chicago Booth alumni, faculty, current and prospective students, and corporate partners in locations around the world to attend industry-specific panel discussions. In addition to being informative and educational events, Chicago Conversations encourage those in attendance to make connections and build relationships at a post and pre-panel reception.
