University of Melbourne launches Global Centre in Delhi, its first in India

The University of Melbourne inaugurated its Global Centre in Delhi on Tuesday, marking it as the university’s central hub in India, officials said.

The Melbourne Global Centre-Delhi will highlight the university’s wide-ranging educational programs, innovative research, and community engagement initiatives.

Philip Green, Australia’s High Commissioner to India, noted that the centre will enhance educational and research ties, fostering collaboration. “The centre reflects Australia and India’s shared vision for education and research as key drivers of economic growth and social impact. It will create new opportunities for students and researchers to come together, innovate, and address shared challenges,” Green said.

Michael Wesley, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global, Culture and Engagement) at the University of Melbourne, added that the centre will host cultural performances, art exhibitions, and lectures, connecting research with Indian corporations, industry partners, and academic institutions.

“Our global strategy, launched earlier this year, strengthens our goal to become a knowledge hub for Asia and the Pacific, combining educational excellence with international research collaboration,” Wesley said.

Speaking to PTI, Wesley clarified that while the centre will not offer degree programs, it will provide non-degree training, such as professional development and skill enhancement programs.

“It will offer training to individuals looking to upgrade specific skills, such as civil servants, and facilitate student exchanges between Australian and Indian universities,” Wesley added. One of the centre’s key offerings is bringing University of Melbourne students to Delhi to collaborate with Indian students on joint projects and workshops, fostering meaningful cross-cultural interactions.
