Overview

The University of Petroleum & Energy Studies (UPES) is a private university located in Dehradun, Uttarakhand well known for education and research in the fields of energy and power. UPES was founded in the year 2003 through UPES Act, 2003 of the State Legislature of Uttarakhand. Its mission is to develop industry focused professionals with global outlook in Energy, Infrastructure, Transportation, IT and allied sectors. UPES is recognised by University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956 and is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). UPES is the one of the first universities of India to offer UG, PG and PhD programmes in the core sectors of petroleum and energy. It is the first Indian energy institution to set up an in-house Bio-Diesel Laboratory.

Campus

The 44 acre wifi enabled UPES campus hosts 100 spacious and well lighted multimedia enabled lecture halls, a well-stocked library featuring 73,327 volumes of publications including books, standards, reports, proceedings and more than 150 national and international journals in the fields of Petroleum Exploration, Power, Infrastructure, Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering, Information Technology and Management. UPES has also acquired institutional memberships of the British Council Library, the American Centre Library, the AIMA Library, the Central Secretariat Library, and DELNET, IIP, WIHG Dehradun. UPES hosts well-equipped laboratories for different departments such as Aerospace, Mechanical engineering, civil and chemical engineering, basic science, R & D labs. UPES offers 3 colleges, 4 schools and a centre in the campus. The EDGE programme organises workshops, skill trainings and mock interviews to prepare students for the placement procedures. Students are also briefed about job opportunities through placement talks delivered by leading organisations of the industry. Besides job offers provided to final semester students, the university also offers a variety of internship opportunities to students to prepare them for their professional careers. Recent placement highlights- 2020: A placement percentage of 94% was recorded in the 2020 placement drive which witnessed the participation of over 560 companies in the campus recruitments and saw 2318 students placed. The highest CTC was recorded at INR 45 LPA, while the average CTC stood at INR 5.25 LPA. Top recruiters included Amazon, Accenture, Microsoft, HP, Deloitte and HCL.

General Information

Admission

Undergraduate admission- B.Tech. Selection criteria: JEE Main merit and UPSEAT scores/ranks. Eligibility: Board merit- 10­+2 with PCM from a recognised board with the minimum required aggregate OR JEE Main merit. Admission procedure:

• Candidates must apply for admissions by filling out the online application form from the UPES website along with the payment of application fees.
• Candidates may apply for admission through UPS engineering aptitude test (UPSEAT) followed by counselling which will account for 80% seats.
• Candidates may also apply on the basis on merit in board exams/JEE Main which will account for 20% seats.
• Qualifying candidates will be called for university counselling for seat allocation. Selected candidates may proceed with the verification of their documents and payment of fees to confirm their admission.

Undergraduate admission- LLB Selection criteria: ULSAT entrance (CLAT/LSAT also accepted) and performance in group discussion and interview. Eligibility: 10+2 from a recognised board with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks. Admission procedure:

• Candidates must apply for admissions by filling out the online application form from the UPES website along with the payment of application fees.
• Candidates will be required to appear for the ULSAT entrance. Valid CLAT/LSAT scores will also be accepted. This is followed by a group discussion and personal interview round.
• Selected candidates may proceed with the verification of their documents and payment of fees to confirm their admission.

Undergraduate admission- B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., B.B.A. Selection criteria: Application screening, academic merit and performance in personal interview and group discussion. Eligibility: 10+2 in relevant stream from a recognised university with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks. Admission procedure:

• Candidates must apply for admissions by filling out the online application form from the UPES website along with the payment of application fees.
• Candidates’ applications will be screened (academic merit will be judged), following which candidates will be called for a personal interview round. BBA candidates will also have to appear for a group discussion round.
• Selected candidates may proceed with the verification of their documents and payment of fees to confirm their admission.

Undergraduate admission- B.Des. Selection criteria: UPES-DAT entrance scores and performance in portfolio presentation and interview. Eligibility: 10+2 from a recognised board with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks. Admission procedure:

• Candidates must apply for admissions by filling out the online application form from the UPES website along with the payment of application fees.
• Candidates will be required to appear the UPESDAT entrance.
• Candidates will be called for portfolio presentation and interview.
• Selected candidates may proceed with the verification of their documents and payment of fees to confirm their admission.

Postgraduate admission- M.Tech. Selection criteria: Application screening, GATE/MEET scores and performance in interview. Eligibility: A minimum of 60% marks in 10+2 examinations and B.Tech./B.E. degree in relevant specialisation from a recognised university. Admission procedure:

• Candidates must apply for admissions by filling out the online application form from the UPES website along with the payment of application fees.
• Candidates have to appear for the GATE or MEET examinations and submit their results.
• Following the screening of the applications, candidates will be invited for an interview round.
• Selected candidates may proceed with the verification of their documents and payment of fees to confirm their admission.

Postgraduate admission- M.Sc., M.C.A. and M.A. Selection criteria: Application screening and performance in interview. Eligibility: A minimum of 50% marks in 10+2 examinations and B.Sc. degree in relevant specialisation from a recognised university with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks. Admission procedure:

• Candidates must apply for admissions by filling out the online application form from the UPES website along with the payment of application fees.
• Following the screening of the applications and candidates’ undergraduate degree scores, candidates will be invited for an interview round.
• Candidates will be selected on the basis of their academic merit and performance in interview, following which they may proceed with the verification of their documents and payment of fees to confirm their admission.

Postgraduate admission- M.Des. Selection criteria: CEED or UPESDAT scores, portfolio presentation and interview. Eligibility: A minimum aggregate of 50% in 10+2 and B.Des. degree from a recognised university. Admission procedure:

• Candidates must apply for admissions by filling out the online application form from the UPES website along with the payment of application fees.
• Candidates will be required to appear for CEED or UPESDAT entrances.
• Candidates will be called for portfolio presentation and interview.
• Candidates will be selected on the basis of their CEED/UPESDAT scores, portfolio assessment and performance in interview, following which they may proceed with the verification of their documents and payment of fees to confirm their admission.

Postgraduate admission- LLM Selection criteria: ULSAT-LLM entrance scores (CLAT PG scores also accepted). Eligibility: A minimum aggregate of 50% marks in 10+2 and LL.B degree in relevant stream/specialisation from a recognised university. Admission procedure:

• Candidates must apply for admissions by filling out the online application form from the UPES website along with the payment of application fees.
• Candidates will be required to appear for the ULSAT-LLM entrance. Valid CLAT PG scores will also be accepted.
• Selected candidates may proceed with the verification of their documents and payment of fees to confirm their admission.

Postgraduate admission- M.B.A. Selection criteria: UPESMET or CAT/MAT/GMAT/XAT/NMAT scores and performance in personal interview and group discussion. Eligibility: A minimum aggregate of 50% marks in 10+2 and bachelor’s degree in the relevant discipline from a recognised university. Admission procedure:

• Candidates must apply for admissions by filling out the online application form from the UPES website along with the payment of application fees.
• Candidates will be required to appear for the UPSEMET entrance. Valid scores in national-level entrance exams such as CAT/MAT/GMAT/XAT/NMAT will also be accepted.
• Candidates will then be called for a personal interview and group discussion round.
• Selected candidates may proceed with the verification of their documents and payment of fees to confirm their admission.

Doctoral admission- Ph.D. Selection criteria: RET scores. Eligibility: Bachelor’s/master’s in relevant stream and specialisation from a recognised university with a minimum aggregate of 60% marks and atleast 5 years (3 for legal studies) of relevant industry experience. Admission procedure:

• Candidates must apply for admissions by filling out the online application form from the UPES website along with the payment of application fees.
• Candidates will be selected on the basis of their CAT scores and work experience. A minimum of 5 years industry/teaching experience is required for Ph.D. in engineering and management, and a minimum of 3 years for Ph.D. in legal studies.
• Candidates will then be called for a personal interview and group discussion round.
• Selected candidates may proceed with the verification of their documents and payment of fees to confirm their admission.

Achievement

UPES is the only university to set up a working model oil rig on campus. It is the first Indian energy institution to set up an in-house Bio-Diesel Laboratory. UPES is the only Asian University to receive the World Oil Award. UPES is an endeavour of Hydrocarbons Education & Research Society (HERS), a non profit organisation registered under the Societies Act 1860 dedicated to promoting education and training in Energy and allied sectors.

Accommodation

UPES provides separate hostels for boys and girls with all modern amenities.
