The Archaeology department within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the UK-based University of Southampton is inviting applications for September 2019 intake of its MSc Business and Heritage Management programme. The one-year full time programme offers students a tailor-made curriculum to develop skills required from the disciplines of Business and Archaeology to allow effective management of the world’s heritage, which attracts an increasing number of visitors, already in their multi-millions each year, as part of a global industry worth hundreds of billions of US dollars. The University of Southampton’s Archeology department is ranked 48th in the world in the QS world University Rankings 2019 and 3rd for the research power in the UK (REF 2014).
Students pursuing the MSc Business and Heritage Management programme will acquire an understanding of the economic and legal principals within which heritage management operates across the globe, from Museum displays to site presentations and how heritage shapes national identities. Their skills will be developed in cultural heritage management in an international framework including environmental impact assessment (EIA) and the presentation of heritage. They will also be taught the theory and practice of assessing, preserving, presenting and mitigating the impact of development on our shared heritage.
Field trips to sites and an interface with professionals working within the field of heritage management will be arranged to give students experience in the interpretation and presentation of cultural heritage and its utilisation as an economic and cultural resource. The business skills of the students will be enhanced in finance, marketing, project and risk management to provide a broad base suited to working in both the public and private sectors.
Graduates of this programme will be ready to handle business and management roles in heritage, tourism and construction sectors. The course will prepare them to manage work at all kind of sites ranging from national trust properties to country estates of immense agricultural and historical importance. It will also make them ready to take on government positions in heritage bodies, private consultancy and non-governmental organisations.
Eligibility: Bachelors degree awarded by a recognised University or an equivalent professional qualification approved by the university with an overall qualification of at least 60 percent; IELTS 6.5 overall, with minimum of 6.5 in reading and writing, 6.0 in listening and speaking, or an equivalent standard in other qualifications approved by the university; students who have achieved 70 percent in English in class XII from CBSE or CISCE may be exempted from additional English language requirements.
