Amid the rapid rise in the number of Covid-19 cases, several state boards as well as the national and international boards have deferred and cancelled the Class X and XII board examinations.
The examinations in most states are scheduled to be conducted between mid-April and June end.
Many state governments are taking strict actions to curb the spread of the disease. Noticing the steady increase in the number of Covid-19 cases, students, parents, teachers, state governments and political parties had been urging the Centre to postpone or cancel the Class X and XII board exams.
After a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union education minister Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank and other senior officials of the ministry on April 13, the Centre announced that the CBSE Class X board examination was being cancelled and CBSE Class XII examinations postponed.
The Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) has decided to defer the 2021 ICSE (Class X) and ISC (Class XII) examinations scheduled to start from May 4 because of the surge in Covid-19 cases, the CISCE announced recently. The revised dates will be announced after reviewing the situation.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) has also decided to cancel the board exams in India. Students will be promoted to the next class or be eligible to receive the school passing certificate based on a special assessment system. Students will be marked based on their coursework and predicted grades.
The Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) will not be going ahead with the June 2021 exams. Instead, it will switch to school-assessed grades, so that students can receive certification and progress with their education.
States:
Similarly, several state boards too have decided to postpone and cancel the exams. The latest status of the examinations in various states and is as follows:
Punjab: The Punjab Education Board has cancelled the Class X exam and postponed the Class XII exam.
Haryana: The state government has cancelled Class X and postponed the Class XII board. The results of Class X students will be declared on the basis of internal assessment and pre-board exams. The revised timetable for Class XII will be announced after the Covid-19 situation is under control, the state government has said.
Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu state board has cancelled Class X exams due to the COVID-19 surge. The state government is holding discussions to decide if the state board Class XII exams can be deferred.
Telangana: The state board has cancelled Class X exam and postponed the XII exams.
Odisha: The state government postponed Class X and XII exams 2021 till further notice.
Uttar Pradesh: The Class X and XII board exams of the state boards deferred till May 20 2021.
Madhya Pradesh: The Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education has postponed the Class X and XII board exams till May 30. The deferred exams are likely to be held between first and last week of June. The revised schedule will be released soon.
Chhattisgarh: The Class X and XII board exams have been postponed. The revised timetable will be announced when the situation is under control.
Maharashtra: The state government has postponed the Class X and XII board exams till further notice. The state boards are likely to release the revised schedule once the situation is under control in the state.
Gujarat: The state boards have postponed both Class X and XII board exams.
Rajasthan: The state boards have postponed both Class X and XII exams till May 30. The revised time-table is yet to be released.
Himachal Pradesh: The state government has postponed both Class X and XII board exams.
Jharkhand: The state government to meet senior officials to take a decision on cancelling or postponing the Class X and XII board examinations.
Goa: No decision on change of schedule has been taken so far. The board exams will take place as per schedule.
Andhra Pradesh: The state board has not postponed the exams and will conduct them as per the schedule.
Kerala: The state board will conduct the board exams 2021 as per the schedule. The exams will commence on April 26.
Assam: Class X and XII board exams to be held as per schedule.
West Bengal: The Class X and XII state board exams will be conducted as per schedule.
Arunachal Pradesh: Class X and XII state board exams will take place as per schedule.
Karnataka : No decision taken so far on change of exams schedules. Class X and XII examinations will take place as per schedule.
Meghalaya: The state board examination will take place as per schedule.
Tripura : The state board examination will take place as per schedule.
