UPSC 2021 Results: Women lead from the front

Women candidates have led the results for the Union Public Service Commission 2021 announced Monday (May 30) with four of the five all-India ranks being bagged by women candidates. 

Shruti Sharma, who ranked first in the country – All India Rank (AIR 1), is an alum of St Stephen’s College, Delhi, and the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi. Other women candidates, Ankita Agarwal, Gamini Singla, and Aishwarya Verma secured second, third, and fourth place respectively.

Among the state toppers, Mumbai’s Priyamvada Mhaddalkar became the Maharashtra topper and ranked 13 at the All India level. Priyamvada who appeared for the exam on a second attempt is an alum of Mumbai’s engineering college Mumbai’s VJIT college and IIM Bangalore. Preparing for the exam for the past two years, Priyamvada quit her job to focus on her studies. 

In all, 47 students from Maharashtra made it to the final list of 685 successful candidates.

The UPSC exams are conducted to determine jobs for prestigious government posts in the Indian Administrative Services (IAS), Indian Foreign Services (IFS), and the Indian Police Service (IPS).

A total of 685 candidates were successful in the exams of which 177 of these were women. While 244 candidates were from the general category, 73 were from the economically weaker sections (EWS) category, 203 from the other backward classes (OBC) category, 105 from the scheduled castes (SC), and 60 from the scheduled tribes (ST) categories.
