On Wednesday, the Supreme Court directed the Muzaffarnagar Superintendent of Police to provide a status report on the investigation into the case of a student allegedly being slapped by classmates on their teacher’s instructions.

Justices Abhay S Oka and Pankaj Mithal also requested information on measures taken to safeguard the student and parents. Additionally, the court issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government, with a response deadline of September 25. This matter was brought to the Supreme Court’s attention through a PIL filed by Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, who sought a swift investigation into the incident.

The teacher involved was booked by Muzaffarnagar Police for allegedly making communal comments and instructing her students to slap a Muslim classmate for not completing his homework.

The school received a notice from the state education department regarding the incident.
