Uttarakhand cancels school reopening amid rising Covid cases

The Uttarakhand government on Tuesday, September 15 said that no schools of any kind will open in the state from September 21 due to the rise in the number of Covid-19 cases. The state’s education minister, Arvind Pandey announced the same adding that the future of children cannot be put at risk.

Of late, Uttarakhand has witnessed a sudden rise in coronavirus cases with 7,580 people testing positive for the infection in just a week which took the tally from 25,436 on September 7 to 33,016 in September 14. According to an official figure, the number of active cases in the state is more than 10,000. 

Earlier, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued the guidelines for the reopening of schools for students of classes 9 to 12 from September 21, 2020. The Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by the MHA listed several health and safety measures in order to ensure students can attend classes safely and don’t lose out on their academics. It added that students from classes 9 to 12 will have the option of attending the classes remotely/virtually or physically on a voluntary basis for guidance from their teachers subject to written permission of parent/guardian.
