Overview

Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) is a private co-educational university located in the Vellore district of Tamil Nadu. Founded in 1984 as the Vellore Engineering College by G. Vishwanathan, a former Member of Parliament and minister in the government of Tamil Nadu, VIT boasts nine schools offering 15 undergraduate, 30 post graduate programs and 13 research centers.

VIT has been accredited with the highest grade ‘A’ by the National Board of Accreditation and has been conferred the ‘Deemed University’ status by the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development and the University Grants Commission, New Delhi.

VIT took off with a vision to “impart quality technical education to cater to the needs of all societies and maintain a high standard of discipline through a dedicated, involved and committed staff; and to promote knowledge wise superior students and to make them ethically strong”.

Campus

VIT campus sprawls over 250 acres with well-planned and comprehensive infrastructure to cater to the needs of the students and faculty. Computer centers are equipped with the latest technology and include 55 servers and over 1000 computers. Modern laboratories enable students and researchers to keep abreast of emerging trends and applications. The library at VIT is housed in a 25 000 sq. ft centrally air conditioned building with over 40,000 books and 4400 back volumes of scientific and technical periodicals. The library also subscribes to 300 specialized journals.

The institute has a dedicated 65 kb and two mb leased line connectivity to internet through VSNL and Dishnet DSL, providing global information access to the staff and students. E-mail accounts are provided for all students and staff members.

VIT offers excellent sports facilities including outdoor and indoor play areas, an outdoor stadium on a 30 acre plot with a 400 metre athletics track and a seating capacity of 2000 students in the covered stand.

The health centre at VIT is staffed with well qualified medical professionals with separate wards for male and female.

Extracurricular: Co-curricular and extracurricular activities are planned and executed through a number of associations, clubs, societies and students’ chapters of professional bodies. They are owned and managed by representatives of students and are monitored by the faculty in-charge.

Placements:

The placement and training (PAT) centre plays a vital role in creating the illustrious placement record of VIT. It ensures smooth functioning of the placement activities in the campus. The centre further facilitates training activities of the students and makes sure they get placed in the best of both national and international companies.

• The PAT sends out invitations to recruiters with placement brochures and related documents.
• Students participating in the placement drives must apply for the recruitment process with necessary documentation and attend the briefing session conducted by recruiters.
• Candidates must apply and appear for a round of career assessments, screening tests and HR interviews to qualify for final placement. Candidates qualifying these rounds may secure their placement by cleating the final group discussion and private interview round.

2021 placement highlights: 382 companies have offered over 7403 jobs (4503 multiple offers) to VIT students in phase-I of VIT’s placement drive. The leading companies participating in the placement drive included Microsoft, Wipro, Bosch and Philips, while the average CTC stood at INR 6.39 LPA (UG) and INR 6.07 LPA (PG).

Undergraduate Admissions (B.Tech.)

Selection Criteria: VITEEE score/rank

Eligibility: 10+2 with PCM/PCB from a recognized board with a minimum of 60% marks

Admission Procedure:

• Candidates are required to register for admission to VIT and apply for the VITEEE entrance, with the submission of the application form along with the required documents and payment of application fees.
• Candidates must apply and appear for the VITEEE entrance and acquire the qualifying cut-off required to be invited to the VITEEE counselling session.
• Qualifying candidates will have to attend the counselling session at VIT, where they may confirm their admission by verifying documents and paying fees.

Undergraduate Admissions (B.Arch./B.Des.)

Selection Criteria: VITEEE, UCEED and NATA score/rank

Eligibility: 10+2 with PCM/PCB from a recognized board with a minimum of 60% marks

Admission Procedure:

• Candidates are required to register for admission to VIT and apply for the VITEEE entrance, with the submission of the application form along with the required documents and payment of application fees.
• Candidates must apply and appear for the VITEEE entrance and acquire the qualifying cut-off required to be invited to the VITEEE counselling session.
• Candidates passing the UCEED exam may also apply for B.Des. A valid NATA score is required for B.Arch. admissions.
• Qualifying candidates will have to attend the counselling session at VIT, where they may confirm their admission by verifying documents and paying fees.

Undergraduate Admissions (B.A./B.C.A./B.B.A./B.C.H.M./B.Sc.)

Selection Criteria: academic merit and counselling

Eligibility: 10+2 with from a recognized board with a minimum of 60-70% marks

Admission Procedure:

• Candidates are required to register for admission to VIT with the submission of the application form along with the required documents and payment of application fees.
• Candidates must appear for the university-conducted entrance exam. Candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of their entrance results and marks obtained in last qualifying exams.
• Shortlisted candidates will be invited to the VIT counselling session, where they may confirm their admission by verifying documents and paying fees.

Postgraduate Admissions (M.Tech./M.C.A.)

Selection Criteria: VITMEE/GATE scores and performance in interview.

Eligibility: bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline/specialisation from a recognised university

Admission Procedure:

• Candidates are required to register for admission to VIT and apply for the VITMEE entrance, with the submission of the application form along with the required documents and payment of application fees.
• Candidates must apply and appear for the VITMEE entrance and acquire the qualifying cut-off required to be invited to the VITEME counselling session.
• Candidates are also recommended to apply and appear for the GATE entrance, marks secured in which will qualify candidate to attend GATE counselling.
• Qualifying candidates will have to attend the VITMEE/GATE counselling session, where they may confirm their admission by verifying documents and paying fees.

Postgraduate Admissions (M.Sc./M.Des.)

Selection Criteria: merit in qualifying exams, CEED score

Eligibility: bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline/specialisation from a recognised university

Admission Procedure:

• Candidates are required to register for admission to VIT with the submission of the application form along with the required documents and payment of application fees.
• Candidates will be shortlisted based on merit in last qualifying exams. M.Des. applicants must register and appear for the CEED entrance.
• Admission to integrated M.Sc. has an additional interview round.
• Shortlisted candidates will be invited to the VIT counselling session, where they may confirm their admission by verifying documents and paying fees.

Postgraduate Admissions (M.B.A.)

Selection Criteria: CAT/ MAT/ XAT/ GMAT/ NMAT/CMAT scores

Eligibility: bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline/specialisation from a recognised university with a minimum of 60% marks.

Admission Procedure:

• Candidates are required to register for admission to VIT with the submission of the application form along with the required documents and payment of application fees.
• Candidates must apply and appear for the CAT/ MAT/ XAT/ GMAT/ NMAT/CMAT entrances, the scores obtained in which shall be the basis of shortlisting.
• Shortlisted candidates will be invited to the VIT counselling session, where they may confirm their admission by verifying documents and paying fees.

Doctoral Admissions (Ph.D.)

Selection Criteria: VITREE scores, personal interview, research output and academic merit.

Eligibility: master’s degree in relevant discipline/specialisation from a recognised university with a minimum of 60% marks

Admission Procedure:

• Candidates are required to register for admission to VIT with the submission of the application form along with the required documents and payment of application fees.
• Candidates must appear for the VITREE entrance, following which the candidate will be asked to present their research output and sit for a personal interview session.
• Candidates will be shortlisted based on overall academic merit in last qualifying exam, VITREE and personal interview scores and research output evaluation. Shortlisted candidates may confirm their admission by verifying documents and paying fees.

Achievement

VIT has been accredited with the highest grade ‘A’ by the National Board of Accreditation and has been conferred Deemed University status by the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development and the University Grants Commission, New Delhi.

VIT has been ranked fourth in the EducationWorld India Engineering Colleges Rankings 2020-21.

Vellore Institute of Technology has been ranked number eight 8 in the Times of India survey of best engineering colleges in India.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has accredited VIT as an A-grade institution. VIT is also accredited by Cognizant, Ericsson and Wipro Technologies.

Accommodation

A total of 17 hostels are housed within VIT campus comprising thirteen men’s hostels, with a capacity to accommodate 7000 students and four women’s hostels which can accommodate 3200 students. A gym facility is also available with well maintained swimming pool.

Women students have access to gym facilities and a newly built swimming pool within the women’s hostel premises.
