Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Chennai was promoted in 1956 as a kindergarten school for boys under the aegis of the Members of the Mylapore Ladies Club (MLC) by the founder principal, Sister Subbalakshmi. The school became co-educational in 1978. It is affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi and offers education from lower kindergarten (LKG) to class XII. The school maintains a high faculty-student ratio of 1:21, thereby facilitating individual attention to each student.
The school campus hosts a well-stocked library with approximately 10,000 books, classrooms equipped with interactive smart boards, audio-visual facility and LCD projector, and fully equipped math, science and English language lab. The school also offers a special learning centre to help children with learning difficulties.
The school is affiliated with CBSE and offers classes from LKG to class XII. The academic year commences in. Pre-primary has five sections, each with a maximum capacity of 30 students. Classes from I to XII have four sections with a maximum capacity of 38 students per section. The school lays emphasis on holistic development of the students; examinations are not conducted at the primary level to make learning interesting and less stressful.
Extracurricular: The school offers a range of extracurricular activities such as scouts, yoga, dance, music and karate. It also promotes sports such as football, cricket, volleyball, basket ball and athletics and encourages club activities, namely nature club, heritage club, science club, and literary and dramatics club.

Application forms are available in the school office. For the admission to LKG, students must have completed 3 years of age as on March 31 of the year of admission. Entrance test is conducted for admission to UKG and above and admissions are subject to vacancies. 25 percent of the seats are reserved for the economically weaker section.
