As the world celebrates International Women’s Day 2025, the focus is on fostering inclusion and accelerating progress toward gender equality. This year’s themes – “March Forward: For ALL Women and Girls” and “Accelerate Action” – emphasise the need for urgent, impactful change.
EducationWorld is proud to feature Dr. Rutvi Vyas, an eminent education leader, to share her insights on advancing gender parity in education and creating a more inclusive future.
Steps to Achieve Gender Parity in Education
It is a very vital issue — promoting gender parity and equality in education. Education is a basic right, and yet millions of children, particularly girls, are denied the right to learn through gender discrimination.
In order to fill this gap, we have to act decisively. We must first provide equal access by removing financial and social barriers that keep girls away from school. Incentives and scholarships for female students can motivate families to send them to school.
Second, we have to develop secure and supportive environments for learning. Schools ought to provide decent sanitation facilities, girl role models, and anti-gender-based-violence as well as harassment strict policies.
Third, the curriculum must foster gender sensitisation by eliminating stereotypes and motivating boys and girls to visualise themselves equally capable in every sphere of human endeavor —science, leadership, among other areas.
Fourth, teacher education programmes must address gender equity to promote a culture of respect and equality within the classroom.
Finally, we need community action. When we work together – parents, teachers, policymakers – we build lasting change.
“By taking these steps, we don’t just empower girls — we build a world where every child, regardless of gender, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed,” adds Dr. Vyas.
