Writ petition seeks ban on Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League over alleged student killings

August 20, 2024

On Monday, a writ petition was filed at the High Court seeking a ban on the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League party and the cancellation of its registration. The petition cites the party’s alleged role in the killing of student protesters in Bangladesh earlier this month.

Arifur Rahman Murad Bhuiyan, executive director of the rights organization Sarada Society, also requested the court to extend the tenure of the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus to at least three years. Additionally, the petition seeks an order to rename institutions associated with Hasina and recover Tk 11 lakh crore allegedly laundered abroad. It also calls for the transfer of officials appointed during Awami League’s tenure.

The petition comes amid a wave of murder charges against Hasina, who resigned and fled to India on August 5 following massive student protests over a controversial quota system. More than 230 people were killed in the violence that erupted after the fall of Hasina’s government, raising the death toll to over 600 since the student protests began in mid-July.

The Awami League, founded in 1949, is one of Bangladesh’s oldest and most influential political parties, playing a significant role in the country’s independence and its politics alongside the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by former Prime Minister Khalida Zia. The court is expected to hear the case on Tuesday.
