I‚m an arts graduate, have done a one-year diploma course in travel and tourism and am currently working for a Singapore Airlines call centre. Please advise.Priyanka Kamath, Delhi Without a work visa you can‚t get a job in the US or Australia, and with a mere BA qualification you‚re not likely to qualify for employment either. However, if you read for a Master‚s degree at an American or Australian university, you‚ll be allowed to work while studying. To be eligible for a Master‚s degree programme in the US, you should have completed 16 years of education while in Australia 15 years of education is sufficient. A bachelor‚s degree earned from a recognised Indian university (including distance learning) is generally accepted by universities abroad, although diploma programmes are not. While universities in the US require international students to write the GRE and TOEFL exams, universities in Australia require students to submit IELTS scores. Both IELTS and TOEFL are English language proficiency tests. I‚ll finish class XII (physics, chemistry and biology) next year and want to study forensic sciences. Sheila D‚Cruz, Bangalore The company secretary course offered by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (www.icsi.edu) is a good option. There is no specific course to study civil law. However vacation jobs with a legal practitioner or a law firm in their civil law division will provide you some on-the-job work experience. The most important requirement for a career in civil and/or company law is a first class law degree.
