Your Counsellor RepliesI want to pursue a career in forensic psychology. Please advise.Arti, KolkataAfter completion of your B.Sc in psychology you could enroll for a one-year certificate course in forensic science at Delhi University. Two-year Master‚s programmes in forensic science are offered by Aligarh Muslim University; University of Rajasthan, Jaipur; Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai; Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar University, Agra; Punjabi University, Patiala; Delhi University; Anna University, Chennai; Karnatak University, Dharwad and Lucknow University. However the National Institute of Criminology and Forensic Science is the country‚s premier institution for training professionals of the criminal justice system in the twin fields of criminology and forensic science. Internationally, King‚s College and the University of Strathclyde in Britain offer the most reputed M.Sc courses in forensic sciences. After completing my BE (mechanical) in 2007, I would like to pursue a postgraduate course in industrial design. Apart from the IITs and NID (National Institute of Design), which other institutes offer this course?Venkat Narayan, BangaloreYou can use yourGATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) score to apply for postgraduate programmes in industrial design offered by Laxmi Narain College of Technology, Bhopal; Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Bhopal (www.manit.ac.in) and School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi (www.spa.ernet.in/courses.htm).Since product design falls within the purview of industrial design, check whether the MDes (Master of design) programme in product design and engineering at the Centre for Product Design & Manufacturing, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (www.iisc.ernet.in/depts/cpdm or www.cpdm.iisc.ernet.in) fulfills your requirement. You would need to write GATE followed by DAT (design aptitude test) conducted by IISc. You could also apply for admission into the postgrad programmes in product design and manufacturing offered by R.V. College of Engineering, Bangalore (www. rvce.ac.in) and Visvesvaraya Technological University, Jnana Sangama, Belgaum 590014.After graduating in computer science engineering I would like to do an MBA. Please provide information on part-time and one-year MBA programmes.Nalini Sawant, PuneAnMBA together with an engineering degree will help you land a well-paid job in the corporate sector. If you qualify for admission into a premier management institute offering a full-time two-year MBA programme, you will enjoy the additional benefit of campus recruitment and placement. Moreover some management institutes offer three-year part-time MBA courses to graduates with at least two years of executive experience. Although part-time courses don‚t come with the option of campus placement, they are equivalent to the two-year full-time MBA in content and structure. You could also check out one-year diploma courses in business management, although they are not on a par with the regular two-year MBA. An exception, however, is the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad which offers a one-year postgrad MBA programme at the ISB Campus, Gachibowli, Hyderabad 500019 (www.isb.edu/pgp). This study programme is open to graduates with two years plus work experience (post-qualification) and good GMAT scores. I‚m a Plus Two (science) student and want to qualify as an engineer. Please provide information on the RECs (Regional Engineering Colleges).Naresh Tiwari, LucknowEach REC or National Institute of Technology (NIT ‚ as the RECs have been redesignated) reserves 50 percent of its annual intake for students domiciled in the state of its location.Students applying for these seats are usually selected on the basis of their performance in the state‚s common entrance examination or Plus Two grades, as the case may be. Each REC/ NIT allots 50 percent seats to students from other states and nowadays, such seats are allocated on the basis of AIEEE (All India Engineering Entrance Examination) scores. AIEEE is conducted by the CBSE. So to have access to all of the 18 RECs/ NITs, you should write the AIEEE.I‚m in class XI and want to qualify as a dentist. Please provide details about eligibility requirements and institutes offering this subject.Anjali Furtado, MumbaiAfter your Plus Two (physics, chemistry and biology), you‚ll have to write the Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by the Maharashtra government (www.dmer.org) for admission into colleges in the state offering the bachelor‚s programme in dental sciences (BDS). Admission into BDS courses at Manipal (www.manipal. edu), Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai (www.smc.edu) and Bharati Vidya-peeth‚s Dental College (www.bharati vidyapeeth.edu) are through separate entrance tests conducted by the institutions themselves. To improve your chances of admission you could write the All India Pre-Medical/ Pre-Dental Test (AIPMT) conducted by CBSE. A good grade will qualify you for the 15 percent quota reserved in dental colleges run by the Union of India, state governments, municipal or other local authorities across the country (except in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir) for AIPMT examinees. The question papers of the Maharashtra CET are based on the Plus Two (science) syllabus of the Maharashtra state examination board. Other national level selection tests focus on a more broad-based Plus Two curriculum. Among the specialisations are orthodontics, oral pathology, prosthodontics, endodontics, period-ontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, etc. I‚m an officer with a public sector bank and would like to do an MBA through correspondence. Please advise.Swati Shah, AhmedabadThe best option for you is the distance MBA programme offered by IGNOU (www.ignou.ac.in) or AIMA (www.aima-ind.org). IGNOU also offers an MBA (banking and finance) through IIBF (www.iibf.org.in).
