A recent study by Bengaluru school students has revealed that thermal paper, handled by millions daily as bills dispensed in ATMs or shopping centres contains potentially harmful chemicals.

The research, conducted by R Usha (Grade 10, Sai Krushna Vidya Mandir School), Aniketh V Bhat (Grade 10, Rashtrotthana Vidya Kendra), and R. Nalini (Grade 9, Sai Krushna Vidya Mandir School), was part of the Anveshana programme at the Prayoga Institute of Education Research under principal investigator Dr. Athavan Anand and co-PI Asha C H.

The team found Bisphenol S (BPS) and Diphenyl Sulfone (DPS) in both printed and unprinted thermal papers. BPS, often used to replace the now-banned Bisphenol A (BPA), can transfer to skin when receipts are handled and may affect hormones, the nervous system, the heart, and even increase cancer risk.

Using solvents and thin-layer chromatography, the researchers analysed receipts from ATMs, supermarkets, bus tickets, and more. Toxicity tests on water fleas (Daphnia pulex) showed significant heart rate reductions and death at higher doses, indicating serious potential risks for repeated exposure.

The findings highlight public health concerns for people who handle receipts daily, including cashiers and bus conductors.

Dr S Athavan, senior researcher – chemistry, the principal investigator (PI) for this project pointed out that opting for e-bills in the form of email or SMS is an easy and environmentally friendly step to minimise exposure.

“The significance of our findings lies in uncovering how everyday items, such as shopping receipts, can expose people to harmful chemicals like bisphenol derivatives. The students demonstrated genuine curiosity and commitment, from learning the basics of extraction and analysis to interpreting the broader implications of their results. Beyond laboratory skills, the project gave them a sense of responsibility to create awareness in their families and communities.” added Dr Athavan.
