PW invited parents of Sadhbhavana World School, Kozhikode to share how they boost their children’s immune systems

“As a mother of two — Haya (grade IX) and Kanaan (grade III) — my biggest concern is keeping them healthy and preventing illness. We are constantly looking for ways and means to strengthen their immunity and overall well-being. As a doctor, I strongly believe in timely immunisation, which I consider essential. We also try to limit outside food, although convincing them to eat green vegetables can be challenging. Persistence truly makes a difference. We are very particular about handwashing and always carry a sanitizer when visiting public places or gaming arcades. Physical activity is equally important. While Haya plays throwball, Kanaan attends football coaching. Most important, children must understand the value of hygiene and healthy habits” — Dr. Ihsan Ahamed, Orthodontist, Midac Dental Care, Kozhikode.

“For our children — Aditi (grade IX) and Ayushi (grade V) — building immunity is about following healthy habits, not quick fixes. We avoid miracle cures and focus instead on balanced daily routines. In every meal, we include fruit, vegetables, proteins, and whole grains to provide essential nutrients. We also prioritise proper hydration to keep their bodies functioning well. When they suffer from coughs or colds, we normally take a gentle wait-and-watch approach, allowing their immune systems to respond naturally unless symptoms become serious. We believe this helps their bodies grow stronger over time. Moreover outdoor play is equally important. While we avoid overprotection, we ensure all vaccinations are taken on schedule. Ultimately, immunity grows through consistent, sensible choices made every day” — Rudra Sen Sharma, Professor of Economics, IIM-Kozhikode

“We are strongly focussed on building healthy habits to support the immunity and overall well-being of our children Namit and Nikita — both grade X students. Along with ensuring they receive timely vaccinations and remain well hydrated, we provide balanced meals that include plenty of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Their diet also includes foods rich in vitamins C and D, zinc, and probiotics such as yogurt to strengthen immunity. We make sure they get adequate sleep, as proper rest plays a vital role in immunity building. Regular physical activity including outdoor play, sports, and daily walks, is part of their routine. Since early childhood, they have practiced proper handwashing. Occasional seasonal coughs or colds don’t worry us.” — Dr. Vinod Ravindran, Rheumatologist, Kozhikode

“We believe a strong immune system begins with a balanced lifestyle and nurturing environment. Aaron (grade X), our only child and a student at Sadhbhavana World School since preschool, was fortunate to grow up surrounded by the love and values of his grandparents. The time he spent with them shaped his caring nature, discipline, punctuality and determination. From early age, we encouraged outdoor play for at an hour daily and maintained a consistent sleep routine. As working parents, we make it a point to have dinner together, valuing family time and mindful and healthy eating. Academics apart, he pursues drums, reading, and cricket, maintaining physical activity and emotional well-being. We continue to support healthy eating habits, regular routines, outdoor play, and positive social interactions — believing that these are key to boosting immunity” — Dr. Anu Koshy, Medical officer, Family Health Centre, Vazhakkad
