Workers in India are experiencing higher levels of workplace disruption than the global average while demonstrating a stronger focus on upskilling and skills validation, according to new India findings from the 2026 Human Progress Report by Educational Testing Service.
The report finds that 86 per cent of workers in India faced major workplace disruption over the past year, exceeding the global average. At the same time, 89 per cent are actively building new skills to remain relevant as job security shifts from tenure to adaptability.
The findings indicate that workplace change is becoming a defining feature of employment in India. Workers report adapting to new tools, evolving job roles and increasing expectations around future-ready skills, while also seeking clearer methods to assess and validate their capabilities.
India respondents recorded a Human Progress Index score of 114.4, compared to the global average of 96.7, suggesting higher perceived access to education, skills development and opportunities for mobility.
The report also highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence in the workplace. Workers estimate that more than 42 per cent of their tasks involve directing AI tools, a higher proportion than the global average. Around 78 per cent report using AI primarily to remain competitive rather than by choice.
Demand for formal skills validation is also rising. Ninety per cent of respondents say verified credentials are essential as skill requirements evolve, while 93 per cent believe universities should supplement academic transcripts with skills-based credential records.
“Workers are adapting quickly to a changing job landscape,” said Amit Sevak. “Adaptability is becoming a core skill as individuals build new capabilities despite uncertainty about future roles.”
Globally, the report indicates that workers across markets are navigating sustained workplace transformation driven by AI adoption and shifting expectations. It highlights the need for clearer standards and systems to measure skills, enabling individuals to translate learning into career opportunities.
