A social media post by a mother of a child enrolled at a private school in Bengaluru has gone viral after the parent said that her child faced discrimination at school and that the school management refused to provide her with an explanation of the incident in Kannada.
The incident, which Bhavya, the mother, has posted parts of on social media, shows an altercation between her and the school’s teachers. Bhavya said in a post on Instagram had initially posted a video on social media recording an incident at her daughter’s school, but later uploaded a follow-up video to clarify her version of the events.
She alleged that her daughter had been discriminated against at the Brooklyn National Public School on Kanakapura Road and claimed that it was not the first such incident. According to Bhavya, many parents whose children study at the school do not understand English and are often made to feel insulted because of the language barrier. She said she did not want her daughter to face the same humiliation that she had experienced for not knowing English. While she had no objection to teachers communicating with students in English, she said they should speak to parents in Kannada.
Bhavya said, “my daughter was humiliated in front of classmates after scoring zero marks in an assessment. Other students laughed and clapped, after which she has refused to attend school and begins crying on reaching the school premises.”
She further alleged that the school’s principal, Manasa, asked her to “get out” during their interaction. She questioned how children were being treated if parents were spoken to in such a manner.
Bhavya said that she sought police intervention. She claimed that teachers tried to snatch her mobile phone, prompting her to contact the Hoysala police. She later lodged a complaint but alleged that the school was given preferential treatment and that she was made to wait at the Subrahmanyapura Police station until around 10 pm. She also claimed that the incident had left her daughter psychologically distressed.
EW tried reaching the school for a response but they did not respond.
