The Indian education sector is undergoing one of the most significant transformations in its history. From the introduction of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 to the rapid digitalisation of learning and rising school enrolments, the country’s education system is expanding at an unprecedented pace.
Yet, while classrooms, curricula and learning technologies have evolved dramatically, one critical aspect of education has remained largely unchanged: assessment infrastructure.
Assessment lies at the heart of the education system. It shapes how students learn and how teachers teach. However, many of the tools used to evaluate learning were designed for a time when student numbers were significantly lower and the education system was far less complex.
The scale challenge
India is home to one of the world’s largest student populations, with more than 250 million school-going children. Every year, educational institutions and examination boards conduct millions of tests, examinations and assessments.
As student enrolments continue to rise and competency-based learning becomes more widely adopted, the volume and complexity of assessments have increased significantly. Teachers are now expected to evaluate larger numbers of students while providing meaningful feedback that supports learning outcomes.
However, this remains a daunting task. Assessment processes are often labour-intensive, time-consuming and heavily dependent on manual evaluation. As a result, teachers spend considerable time grading papers instead of teaching, mentoring and supporting students. A YouGov and GL Assessment survey of more than 800 school staff found that teachers spend an average of 6 hours and 48 minutes every week on testing and assessment activities—equivalent to 44 working days during an academic year.
This highlights the growing need for intelligent assessment systems and AI-powered tools that can reduce teachers’ administrative workload, allowing them to devote more time to classroom instruction, student engagement and personalised academic support rather than routine evaluation.
The shift from marks to mastery
Another reason assessment infrastructure requires urgent attention is the shift in the philosophy of education itself.
The NEP emphasises competency-based learning, critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity and holistic development. This is a welcome shift because the skills required for the future cannot be measured through memorisation alone.
However, assessing higher-order thinking skills is far more complex than evaluating objective responses. It requires sophisticated assessment methods, well-defined evaluation criteria and greater consistency among evaluators.
While educational goals have evolved, many assessment tools continue to rely on methods primarily designed to measure content recall. This gap must be bridged through modern assessment infrastructure, including AI-powered assessment tools that support the evaluation of higher-order thinking and competency-based learning outcomes.
Such systems should enable teachers to assess deeper learning effectively without adding to their workload.
The need for faster and more actionable feedback
Assessment should not be used solely to assign marks.
Its primary purpose should be to improve learning. When there is a long delay between an assessment and the delivery of feedback, its educational value diminishes significantly. By the time students receive feedback, they may have already moved on to new topics, causing teachers to miss the opportunity to address learning gaps.
Educational institutions increasingly need systems that deliver timely, accurate and actionable insights.
Recent concerns about inconsistencies in evaluation have also highlighted the limitations of traditional assessment methods. According to the CBSE, more than 87 per cent of re-evaluation requests had to be addressed independently in 2026.
Why technology must become an assessment enabler
Technology has already transformed education through digital content delivery, student engagement, administration and communication. Assessment is the next area poised for meaningful innovation.
Artificial intelligence and data analytics now offer opportunities to make evaluation more efficient, consistent and insightful. These technologies can automate routine tasks while preserving academic integrity and teacher oversight.
However, technology is not a replacement for teachers. Their professional judgement, contextual understanding and expertise remain indispensable.
Instead, technology should function as an intelligent assistant, helping teachers save time, maintain consistency and focus more on students than on repetitive administrative tasks. Modern AI grading software and automated assessment systems can accelerate evaluation, support objective grading frameworks and generate valuable insights that would otherwise be difficult to obtain.
Building trust through transparency
As technology becomes more deeply integrated into assessment, building trust will be equally important.
Parents, students and teachers must have confidence that evaluation systems are fair, transparent and reliable. Modern assessment solutions should therefore prioritise explainability, data security and reduced teacher workload.
Technology should strengthen trust in assessment rather than undermine it. Organisations implementing modern assessment systems must also ensure that teachers retain the final authority over evaluation and grading criteria. Such transparency will be essential for widespread adoption.
Preparing for the future of learning
The future of education will be defined by greater personalisation, data-driven insights and competency-based learning. Students will increasingly learn through multiple pathways, engage with adaptive learning systems and develop capabilities that extend well beyond traditional academic subjects.
