IIT Delhi has reconstituted the committee investigating the death of an MSc student, appointing retired Delhi High Court judge Mukta Gupta as chairperson, officials said on Thursday. Student protests on campus entered their fourth day.

The decision follows the withdrawal of former Uttarakhand director general of police Ashok Kumar, who had been appointed to head the panel. An institute official said Kumar recused himself citing personal reasons.

The five-member committee includes Pratap Sharan, head of the department of psychiatry at AIIMS, New Delhi, two student representatives and the IIT Delhi registrar.

The panel will examine the circumstances surrounding the death of a 31-year-old MSc Physics student, who allegedly died by suicide on campus on August 22. Protests following the incident prompted the administration to suspend classes on Monday. The institute constituted the original committee on Tuesday.

Police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against unidentified persons. Investigators are examining the student’s mobile phone and obtaining counselling records and other information from the institute. Forensic teams have also collected evidence from the campus.
