The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has developed a 20-hour introductory module on computational thinking (CT) and artificial intelligence (AI) for Classes IX-XII, which will be assessed internally by schools during the 2026-27 academic session.
Developed in consultation with IIT Madras and IIT Jodhpur, the module aims to familiarise students with AI, its applications and limitations, including identifying deepfakes and fact-checking information generated by chatbots.
Under the revised Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) scheme, CT and AI modules are compulsory for Class IX, while Class X continues under the existing scheme. The board announced the initiative in an April 9 circular.
NCERT is also preparing separate AI textbooks for students pursuing the subject at an advanced level.
A senior education ministry official said students would learn to use AI tools correctly and verify information, given their growing use in studies, research, content writing and career guidance.
