A report card can tell a parent that their child scored 62 per cent in mathematics. It cannot tell them that the child stopped understanding fractions three months earlier.
By the time that 62 per cent appears on paper, the problem may have already travelled through several lessons, concepts and assignments. The number is accurate. What it leaves out is the story behind it.
That is the limitation of periodic assessment. It tells us where a student stands at a particular point in time, but much less about how they got there.
We often find the problem after it has grown
Periodic testing has an important place in education. It measures achievement, establishes benchmarks and gives schools and families a shared reference point. But the problem begins when a test becomes the first meaningful signal that something is wrong.
A student struggling with fractions may not have a problem with fractions at all. The difficulty could have started with an earlier concept that was never fully understood. By the time a term-end examination exposes it, the student may already be building new learning on top of that gap.
An examination can tell us that a student is struggling. It is much harder for it to tell us when the struggle began, what caused it or what might help. Learning does not happen in neat assessment cycles. It builds layer by layer. When one layer is weak, everything built on top of it can become harder.
The clues are there before the examination
Continuous learning is sometimes mistaken for continuous testing. It is neither.
A teacher does not need another examination to know that a student may be struggling. The clues are often already there: a question asked repeatedly, a familiar mistake in an assignment, hesitation during a classroom activity or a concept that keeps resurfacing without quite clicking. One signal may mean very little. A pattern that emerges over several weeks can mean a great deal.
The challenge is recognising that pattern while there is still time to respond.
UNESCO’s 2024 Global Education Monitoring Report estimates that only 58 per cent of students worldwide reach minimum proficiency in reading and 44 per cent in mathematics by the end of primary school. Being in a classroom and completing a curriculum are not the same as understanding what is being taught.
If we want better outcomes, we need to pay attention to what happens between assessments, not only to what happens when they take place.
Earlier insight changes what a teacher can do
Timing can completely change the nature of an intervention.
If a teacher knows that a concept is not being understood while it is still being taught, there are several options: explain it differently, give the student more practice, revisit an earlier concept or provide additional support.
A term-end examination can reveal the same problem, but by then, the student may be trying to catch up on weeks of learning built on top of it. This also changes what personalisation should mean. Two students can sit through exactly the same lesson and experience it very differently. One may be ready to move ahead, while another may still be trying to understand something taught two weeks earlier.
Teachers have always had to account for those differences. The challenge is doing so consistently for every student without adding another layer of administrative work.
That is where technology can help.
AI should make the teacher’s view clearer
The most useful role for AI in education may not be generating another worksheet or answering another question. It may be helping teachers make sense of what is already happening in their classrooms.
AI can connect patterns across students’ work, identify recurring difficulties and reduce some of the repetitive effort involved in tracking progress. The aim is not to give teachers more information, but to make the information they already have more useful.
Teachers do not need another system competing for their attention. They need technology that reduces the work involved in piecing information together and gives them more time to teach, mentor and understand their students.
The value of AI should not be measured by how much teaching it can take over. It should be measured by how much additional capacity it gives teachers to perform the parts of teaching that require a human being.
A better picture helps everyone around the student
The same gap exists beyond the classroom.
A parent may know that their child scored 78 per cent in mathematics. But what is the child struggling with now? Has the extra help worked? What should they focus on next?
Parents do not need to track every assignment. They need enough context to have a useful conversation with their child and the teacher. School leaders need that picture on a larger scale. Where are students consistently struggling? Which concepts are creating gaps across classrooms? Are interventions actually helping?
A final score can tell a school where it ended up. A fuller picture can help explain why—and where to act next.
The report card still has a role. It just should not have the whole job.
Periodic assessments are not going away, nor should they. They provide benchmarks, measure formal achievement and give schools an important way to evaluate outcomes.
But a report card should be the summary of a learning journey, not the first evidence that the journey went off course. That is the larger shift: from measuring learning occasionally to understanding it continuously; from asking what a student scored to understanding what they know, where they are struggling and what support might help.
A report card should tell us where a student arrived.
It should not be the first time we discover how they got there.
