Delhi Police has registered an FIR and launched an investigation into a series of cyber attacks targeting the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) post-results services portal, officials said on Friday.
The case was registered under Sections 66 and 43(f) of the Information Technology Act after the CBSE filed a complaint with the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of the Delhi Police.
According to the board, the portal, launched on June 2 to facilitate services such as verification and re-evaluation of Class 12 answer sheets, was subjected to repeated cyber attacks over the past three days.
In a statement, the CBSE said the attacks involved large volumes of malicious traffic originating from multiple IP addresses within India and abroad. The board alleged that the attackers sought to disrupt access for legitimate users and attempt unauthorised extraction of information.
The CBSE said any disruption to the portal could affect lakhs of students using post-result services and cause public inconvenience.
The board, however, maintained that its systems and databases remained secure.
“No data breach or unauthorised access has been detected,” it said, adding that the attacks were successfully mitigated through round-the-clock monitoring and response measures.
The CBSE said cybersecurity teams from IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, the Digital India Corporation, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), CERT-In and other central agencies assisted in countering the attacks.
The development comes amid concerns raised by some Class 12 students who claimed that scanned copies of answer sheets uploaded by the board did not match their handwriting, prompting questions over the on-screen marking (OSM) system.
Earlier this week, the Cabinet Secretariat announced the formation of a one-member committee to examine the procurement of services for the OSM system by the CBSE.
Police said the investigation into the cyber attacks is underway.
