A 29-year-old man from Delhi has been arrested for the alleged rape of a 19-year-old college student during a birthday party at a residential flat in Gurugram.
The accused, identified as Divyam, a resident of the Rohini area, was produced before a city court on Monday and subsequently remanded to judicial custody. According to the police, the survivor is a student at Delhi University, originally hailing from West Bengal, who had traveled to a friend’s apartment in Sector 33 on Saturday to attend a birthday celebration where alcohol was being consumed.
Investigators stated that the accused was not a primary guest but had joined the gathering through an invitation from one of the victim’s friends. It is alleged that late at night, the accused, while under the influence of alcohol, began molesting the woman. Police reports indicate that he then allegedly took her to a secluded area within the apartment and sexually assaulted her, taking advantage of her intoxicated state.
The woman resisted the assault and raised an alarm, which successfully alerted her friend and other attendees. Upon being discovered, the accused fled the scene immediately. The survivor approached the authorities the following day, leading to the formal registration of a case at the Sadar Police Station under Section 64(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Following the report, a medical examination was conducted, and the victim’s statement was recorded before a judicial magistrate. A senior police officer confirmed the arrest, noting that preliminary investigations revealed the crime was committed while the accused was heavily intoxicated. While the suspect has been sent to jail, the police have emphasized that a further probe into the circumstances of the incident is currently underway.
In a similar case reported in early 2026 in Pune, a young woman alleged she was sexually assaulted by an acquaintance after a small gathering at a flat where alcohol was being consumed. Police said the accused was not part of her close circle but had joined through mutual friends, and the incident occurred when the survivor was in an intoxicated or vulnerable state.
