President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday underlined the role of education in the development of tribal communities and urged educated individuals to help people access government welfare schemes.
Addressing the Antarrajyiy Jansanskritik Samagam Samaroh–Kartik Jatra in Jharkhand’s Gumla district, Murmu said the Centre was committed to inclusive growth to ensure development reached the last person in society.
“Education is the key to development. It refines personality, creates opportunities and supports inclusive growth and social justice,” she said.
The President noted that many educated people settle in towns and do not return to their villages. She urged them to visit their villages and create awareness about government schemes, stating that such programmes succeed only when people are informed.
The event was attended by Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, Chhattisgarh Governor Ramen Deka and Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai.
Murmu said the government had launched several schemes in the name of Birsa Munda to benefit tribal communities and those still lacking basic facilities. She said efforts were being made to provide housing, drinking water, roads and schools.
She also stressed the need to connect the youth with tribal traditions and advised them to pursue development while preserving their heritage and identity.
On the demand for a tribal university in Gumla, Murmu said she would make efforts and expressed hope that the state government would address the issue.
Sai said Naxalism was in its final stages in Chhattisgarh, adding that over 400 villages had been freed from its influence and placed on the path of development.
The President arrived in Jharkhand on Sunday night on a three-day visit. On Monday, she addressed the 22nd Santali ‘Parsi Maha’ and centenary celebrations of the Ol Chiki script in Jamshedpur, and attended the 15th convocation of the National Institute of Technology.
She returned to Delhi on Tuesday afternoon. Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Hemant Soren, accompanied by MLA Kalpana Soren, met the President in Ranchi.
