IIT Kharagpur launches online executive programmes in AI, machine learning and technology leadership

Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has launched a series of online executive certification programmes in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and technology leadership, aimed at working professionals seeking practical, deployment-focused skills.

Announced on 13 April 2026, the initiative marks the institute’s first set of online executive programmes and forms part of its Platinum Jubilee year activities. The offering includes four programmes: an Executive Postgraduate Certificate in Generative AI and Agentic AI, and an Executive Postgraduate Certificate in AI-Native Software Engineering, both delivered by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering; an Executive Postgraduate Certificate in Applied AI and Machine Learning from the Department of AI; and an Executive Programme in Technology and AI Leadership from the Partha Ghosh School of Leadership.

The programmes are designed to cover the full lifecycle of AI systems, from problem definition and system design to deployment. They focus on areas such as generative AI, large language models and agent-based systems, with an emphasis on real-world applications. All courses will be delivered through live online classes by IIT Kharagpur faculty.

Commenting on the launch, Director Suman Chakraborty said the initiative aims to extend the institute’s engineering approach to professionals beyond the campus, focusing on building systems that operate at scale.

The programmes are part of a phased expansion of IIT Kharagpur’s online education offerings in partnership with upGrad, with additional courses expected over the next three to six months.

Ranked fifth in the NIRF 2025 engineering category, IIT Kharagpur said the curriculum draws on its research ecosystem, including work presented at international conferences such as ICML, NeurIPS, ACL, ICCV and IEEE journals.

Applications are open to software engineers, machine learning practitioners, technical leaders, and mid- to senior-level professionals in business and technology-related roles. Further details are available on the institute’s official website.
