Illinois Institute of Technology has appointed Shyamal Gupta as chief operating officer for its Mumbai operations ahead of the launch of its India campus.
In his new role, Gupta will oversee operations, institutional growth and the implementation of the university’s India strategy. His responsibilities will include aligning the university’s academic model with India’s higher education and industry requirements.
Gupta has previously worked with Ernst & Young, World Bank and SRMS Trust, where he led projects in education and healthcare.
Commenting on his appointment, Gupta said India’s higher education sector was undergoing significant change, with growing demand for globally accredited and industry-integrated programmes. He added that the focus would be on building a university with local relevance and creating an ecosystem that supports innovation and inclusion.
The appointment comes as international universities expand their presence in India amid rising demand for global education programmes. Illinois Tech said it is the first American university authorised to establish a degree-granting campus in India.
Applications for the inaugural Fall 2026 intake at Illinois Tech Mumbai are now open.
