Every generation of students has had to prepare for a world different from the one their parents knew. Today, that world is increasingly shaped by Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is transforming industries ranging from business and healthcare to engineering and finance. As AI becomes integral to the workplace, choosing a course is no longer just about what students want to study, but also about how well their education prepares them for emerging opportunities.
While some institutes offer dedicated programmes in AI, others integrate it into computer science, business and related disciplines. Their approaches differ, combining technical foundations with research, entrepreneurship, interdisciplinary learning and industry exposure. Here are five Indian institutes offering undergraduate pathways for students looking to build careers in the AI economy.
Scaler School of Technology: Project-based learning and AI entrepreneurship
Scaler School of Technology offers two four-year, full-time residential undergraduate programmes: Computer Science & AI and AI & Business. The Computer Science & AI programme focuses on programming, software development, data structures, machine learning and artificial intelligence. The AI & Business programme combines computer science and AI with business fundamentals, product development and entrepreneurship. Both programmes emphasise practical learning through more than 50 projects. The AI & Business programme includes six months dedicated to building a technology startup and another six months of industry immersion. Students also gain exposure to product development and business strategy, helping them understand how technology can be translated into market-ready solutions. An important distinction for prospective students is that Scaler School of Technology is not a degree-awarding institution. Its programmes are certificate-based, and students seeking a formal undergraduate degree need to pursue a separate degree pathway.
IIIT Hyderabad: Strong foundations in computer science and research
A strong understanding of computer science is essential for students aspiring to develop intelligent systems. The four-year B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at the International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT Hyderabad) provides this foundation through subjects such as programming, mathematics, data structures, algorithms and software systems. As students progress, they encounter specialised areas such as machine learning, data science and statistical reasoning. The curriculum combines theoretical learning with practical coursework and projects, including a B.Tech project in the later years. Its research-oriented academic environment also gives students opportunities to explore emerging areas of computing and develop a deeper understanding of the technologies underpinning AI.
IIM Lucknow: Connecting artificial intelligence with business
Artificial Intelligence is increasingly influencing how organisations approach marketing, finance, human resource management and strategic decision-making. The four-year, full-time residential BS in Artificial Intelligence and Business Analytics at IIM Lucknow addresses this intersection of technology and management. The programme combines subjects such as machine learning, generative AI, data science and programming with business analytics and management applications. Students can explore how analytical tools are used in areas such as entrepreneurship, public policy and strategic management. Through practical exercises, case studies and project work, the programme aims to develop an understanding of both the technology behind AI and its applications in organisational decision-making.
IIT Roorkee: An interdisciplinary approach to AI
Artificial Intelligence has applications well beyond the technology sector, with growing relevance in healthcare, engineering and scientific research. IIT Roorkee’s four-year B.Tech in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence offers students an opportunity to explore these applications through an interdisciplinary academic approach. Offered by the Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, the programme combines data science and AI fundamentals with opportunities to explore subjects across other schools and centres within the institute. Students engage with theoretical coursework, laboratory-based learning and practical projects, culminating in a B.Tech project. This approach allows them to develop technical expertise while exploring how AI and data-driven methods can address challenges across different disciplines.
BITS Pilani: Computer science education with industry exposure
A dedicated AI degree is not the only route into the field. BITS Pilani’s four-year B.E. in Computer Science offers a broad foundation in computing, with opportunities to study subjects such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Neural Networks through electives. A distinctive feature of the programme is the institute’s Practice School initiative, which integrates industry experience into undergraduate education. Practice School I is an eight-week programme conducted after the second year, while Practice School II is a 22-week full-time programme offered in the final year. Students work on projects in professional organisations under the guidance of industry mentors and faculty members. This exposure helps them understand workplace requirements and apply their technical knowledge to real-world challenges.
Choosing the right pathway
The route into the AI economy depends on a student’s interests and career aspirations. Those inclined towards technical development may prefer computer science and AI-focused programmes, while students interested in entrepreneurship or organisational decision-making may explore interdisciplinary courses combining technology and business. Research exposure and industry experience are equally important considerations when evaluating undergraduate options. Ultimately, a strong foundation in computing, analytical thinking and practical problem-solving can help students adapt to the evolving demands of an AI-driven economy.
