PW invited parents of The DN Wisdom Tree Global School, Bhubaneswar to share their insights on how they ensure their children manage unpleasant situations

“I always encourage my children – Pranjal (class VII) and Paksh (class I) — to share their happy and stressful moments and don’t keep anything from me. The objective is to build complete trust between us and address any queries they may have. The biggest lesson I have taught them is that life is a combination of the good, bad, and ugly and we must find a balanced way to overcome any challenge. I believe the key lies in patient listening, not making comparisons and being sensitive to children’s fears and worries Mentors at The DN Wisdom school play a crucial role in helping children cope” — Dr. Pallavi Kumar, consultant, Jagannath Hospital

“I believe any situation we find ourselves in, is for a reason and the reason is mostly positive. Initially it might appear unpleasant but eventually we learn it is for the better. I teach my son Shrivin (class III) to accept all of life’s adversities. As as we all are God fearing, we insist that he should trust the plans of God, take a pause before reacting and avoid unnecessary unpleasantness. However in case of unbearable stress we teach him to chant the name of God to calm down and keep working until the situation improves.” — Sulagna Mohanty, banker

“I have always believed in giving a patient hearing to my daughter Giselle (class I) on how she deals with an unpleasant situation and positively analyse her point of view. I take it from there, and slowly ease her into listening to what my thoughts are and how best she could have dealt with the situation without being over-imposing. Connecting emotionally with our children is very important as also letting them know it is perfectly fine to feel the way they feel, and allow them to deal with their emotions and recognise them” — Maryann Bothaju, homemaker

“Parents and teachers are children’s biggest role models. I believe a happy and healthy environment at home and in school will help my children — Vihaan (class III) and Neivisha (class I) — develop the self-confidence to manage pleasant and not so pleasant situations equally well.
