Girls’ enrolment in Delhi schools exceeds that of boys by eight to ten per cent across key levels, according to the Economic Survey of Delhi 2025–26.
At the primary level, the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) for girls stands at 107.2, compared to 97.4 for boys, with an overall figure of 101.8, higher than the national average of 90.9. At the upper primary level, girls recorded a GER of 122 against 113.1 for boys, well above the national average of 90.3.
The trend continues across other stages. At the elementary level, girls’ enrolment was 112.8 compared to 103.4 for boys. At the secondary level, girls recorded 104.7 against 98 for boys, while at higher secondary level, girls stood at 87.2 compared to 78.7.
The Net Enrolment Ratio (NER) also shows girls ahead. At the primary level, girls recorded 100 compared to 90.5 for boys. At upper primary and elementary levels, girls reached near full enrolment, remaining higher than boys and above national figures. At the secondary level, girls recorded 82.5 compared to 72.5 for boys, while at higher secondary level, the figures were 68.8 and 58.8 respectively.
The survey noted that school attendance in Delhi is higher than the national average across levels.
On learning outcomes, results were mixed. In Class 3, language scores were 62 per cent compared to the national average of 64 per cent, while mathematics stood at 57 per cent against 60 per cent. In Class 6, language performance was higher at 60 per cent compared to 57 per cent nationally, while mathematics remained at 47 per cent.
In Class 9, Delhi students performed above the national average in most subjects, with language at 65 per cent compared to 54 per cent, mathematics at 40 per cent compared to 37 per cent, and higher scores in science and social science.
The survey indicates that enrolment and attendance in Delhi are above national levels, with girls leading across categories, while student performance shows varied outcomes.
