Four Indian institutions, including leading Indian Institutes of Technology, have secured places among the world’s top 50 in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject.
The rankings, released by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, assess more than 21,000 academic programmes across 1,900 universities in over 100 countries, covering 55 disciplines and five broad faculty areas.
India recorded 27 top-50 positions across subjects and faculty areas, up from 12 in 2024, with 12 institutions contributing to the tally.
Among the highest performers, Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad ranked 21st globally in Mineral and Mining Engineering. Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad secured 21st position in both Business and Management Studies and Marketing, marking India’s first appearance in the global Marketing rankings.
Institutions placed in the global top 50 include Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani.
Jessica Turner, Chief Executive of QS Quacquarelli Symonds, said India’s performance reflects gains in quality and global competitiveness across engineering, technology and business disciplines.
Indian Institute of Technology Delhi recorded six top-50 rankings, the highest by a single Indian institution in this edition. It led nationally in four subjects: Chemical Engineering (48th), Electrical and Electronic Engineering (36th), Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering (44th), and the Engineering and Technology broad area (36th). The institute also ranked second in Computer Science at 45th.
