The Maharashtra government is considering the extension of educational fee concessions in the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) category, aligning these benefits with those currently available to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category.
The government is also favorably considering adjustments to MBBS development fees.
At a meeting on Thursday, medical education minister Hasan Mushrif and officials reviewed the fee structure and the financial background of students, as well as educational facilities in government and private medical colleges.
Attendees included Anil Bhandari, commissioner of the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) and AYUSH, Sanjay Vinayakrao Khodke, Maharashtra Legislative Council member, his wife Sulabha Khodke, MLA (Amravati) department officials, and the deans of various medical colleges (via video conference).
Mushrif emphasised the need to address the financial burden on MBBS students. With regard to the proposed fee concessions, he said that the government will coordinate with the Higher and Technical Education Department and the Other Backward Bahujan Welfare Department to finalise financial provisions.
“The government is committed to making education both accessible and affordable, and we will reach a decision that prioritises the interests of our students,” he said.
The meeting also reviewed the construction progress of new government medical colleges and affiliated hospitals in Washim, Amravati, and Dharashiv.
At Washim, permission for a government medical college and hospital has been granted; officials have been instructed to commence construction promptly.
As regards Amravati, the tender process for appointing a contractor is underway.
Dharashiv tenders have been opened, and verification is in progress.
Mushrif stressed the importance of high quality construction and directed the officials to ensure that the projects are completed on schedule.
He expressed confidence that “the new institutions will significantly enhance” the state’s healthcare delivery system.
